History:
The Kongo Empire was an African kingdom located in southwest Africa. It is now northern Angola, Cabinda, the Republic
of the Congo, and the western portion of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The empire consisted of six provinces ruled
by a monarch, the Manikongo of the Bakongo (Kongo peoples)
Economy:
The Kongo people survive from day to day on agricultural production, fishing, and hunting.
The Kingdom use to take
taxes from forced labor, and collected fines form people in order to prosper. They would even trade enslaved people and ivory
to Europe. The important harbors were Sonyo and Pinda.
Political Systems:
The King had to be a male descendant of Wene.
He was elected by a group of governors, usually the heads of important
families and sometimes by Portuguese officials.
The activities of the court were ran by a system of civil servants, and
the court itself usually consisted of numerous male relatives of the King.
Religion:
Nzambi was the supreme god for all in the Kongo Kingdom. They also had land and sky spirits, and ancestor spirits. They
were all represented in nkisi objects.
Art:
Most art form from this area is nkisi objects. They come in all shapes, mediums, and sizes. The nkisi figures were one
of the only forms available to everyone. Most of the art was for people with higher status in the society.
